What is a dog pack structure and what does it mean?
Updated: Dec 6, 2019
Refined. In tune. Dialed in. Calibrated.
Pack structure is a basic need of any canine. Their behavior is driven by an operating system that demands structure-rules to navigate the world around them. Predictability in that world is critical in allowing the dog to be themselves without fear of reprisal for unwanted behavior. To this point, training a dog in the ways of how your pack is operated is the key to removing ambiguity from their life, and therefore anxiety.
As such, the basis of any happy canine companion is found in a solid foundation of obedience training. Obedience, just like tracking, bite work, scent discrimination, medical device retrieval, etc...is a job. And while we have different breeds to fill different roles, at a base level dogs just love to work-especially when properly motivated.
Through obedience training we establish a relationship and means of communication that resonates with the canine mind, bridging the gap between their understanding of the world and ours.
Do dogs understand that running into the street is often fatal, that what is in the garbage from last night might hurt them, or that jumping up to greet a new acquaintance is simply rude? No, not until we effectively communicate, through a means that resonates with the dog, can they truly know the message we are trying to get across.
Understanding these messages (i.e. what is expected of them by their pack) is where so many undesirable behaviors are put to rest. Many of those undesirable behaviors are rooted in anxiety, brought on by a lack of consistency or predictability in their lives.
Our four legged pack members crave our leadership - there's no need to worry since dad or mom will take care of whatever they encounter in this modern world - which goes a long way towards allowing a dog to relax, be in the moment and enjoy their favorite thing: You.
So what does "a dialed in pack structure" mean?
It's the promise of Calibrated K9 to take into account both you and your dog's individual situation and relationship in crafting a custom obedience package, with the goal of enhancing that relationship as much as possible. We promise to take you and your dog as far as we can in creating a true understanding of how the other operates, and what each needs from the relationship.
